Aron Gurwitsch has remarkably emphasized the inherently social nature of the Life-world to the extent of using the term ‘Cultural-world’ as a synonym for the former. Our pre-scientific and pre-reflexive experience is, according to Gurwitsch, necessarily directed to a world that we implicitly perceive as inhabited by other fellow human beings with whom we share similar socio-cultural norms. Following this picture, the work of social and natural scientists consists of a process of ‘disenchantment’ in which the social, pragmatic and material determinations of the objects investigated are gradually abstracted. In this talk, I will discuss the privileged place that some recent developments in enactive-ecological cognitive science can instantiate in respect to the phenomenological stance developed by Gurwitsch. In particular, I will discuss the place in which the approaches that stressed the socially and experiential intrinsic character of affordance perception situate in Gurwitsch’s system of the sciences.
