Abstract

When Imre Lakatos left Hungary in November 1956 following the Soviet crushing of the short lived Revolution, he wrote to a friend from the border "Everything happened so quickly. There was no time to say goodbye." To another he wrote "I believe I shall come back because one cannot live without a country."
