Abstract
The reception of Plato's philosophy by Roman culture was one of the factors in its fateful hellenisation which proceeded without force and was accepted without opposition, a few exceptions apart. Rome was open to currents of Greek philosophic thought as it did not possess a dogmatic system of its own and thus did not feel endangered by the penetration of foreign elements.
