Properties, propensities, and challenges

emergence in and from the natural world

Marinus Dirk Stafleu

pp. 119-134

Abstract

Applying the basic distinctions of the philosophy of the cosmonomic idea, it may be possible to suggest some contributions to the development of the concept of emergence, of new properties and new propensities, of new characters, and even of humanity. I will first discuss successively emergence within the physical world, emergence of the physical world, and emergence from the physical world. Next, I will review some implications of the theory of evolution for the challenging emergence of mankind from the animal world. This chapter ends with a discussion of the meaning of emergence.
