....Although a great many sources have been used, one should not look for the results of archival investigation in this book; The focus is much more on the connection and growth of thought than on interesting curiosities. Also, one will seldom find biographical details. Where the discussion is about people, they will only be viewed as intellectual and ethical individualities, and I think that the historical picture which will thereby emerge can only be the better for it....
