George Pólya wrote that the situation of the speaker in a mathematical conference is not easy and also his performance is not often successful. "This is", he wrote, "not much his fault, rather the fault of the vast expanse of mathematics. Any one mathematician can master only a small parcel of present-day mathematics, and usually knows very little about the other small parcel that the next mathematician has mastered."¹
