The demon of circularity

Yair Neuman

pp. 79-82

Abstract

The world as it appears to us is a world inhabited by objects. If we are an object among these objects, this is a situation that presents enormous difficulties for self-knowledge: How can we establish firm foundations for knowledge in a world of which we are a part? A possible solution to this difficulty is to consider self-referential activity as the basic unit of existence, rather than as a well-defined object (the "I").
