Palazzo del Capitanio-Sala delle edicole

In this talk my aim is to show how Husserl's remarks on mathematics can be used to develop an interesting and viable, state-of-the-art approach to philosophy of science. I will first outline Husserl's view on exact sciences (mathematics, logic, mathematical physics) as he puts it forward especially in Formal and Transcendental Logic and The Crisis. After this I will discuss Husserl's approach to the various scientific disciplines in his unpublished manuscripts especially from the 1920s. On this basis, I will develop Husserlian view of sciences as an approach that advocates critical reflection on the epistemic values and the methodologies in diverse disciplines. In the end, I will argue for the usefulness of this approach for multi- and interdisciplinary situations as well as the problems related to theory choice.
